Campaign for better health at work launched

The Trades Union Congress has launched a new campaign to encourage employers to provide better occupational health assistance for their workforce.

According to the organisation, two million employees every year say that they become ill because of job-related injuries or accidents.

Approximately 175 million working days were lost in the UK in 2006 due to sickness, which cost employers around £650 per worker.

"Many people are ill and in pain as a result of lifting injuries, slips and trips, stress and noise-induced hearing loss suffered either at, or caused by, their work," said TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber.

A new guide was released yesterday (April 28th) to coincide with Workers' Memorial Day, which aims to provide information for union health and safety representatives.

It is hoped that 15,000 people will be trained using the guide, which the TUC says could enable employers to find solutions to more work-related health problems.

The TUC aims to be the voice of British workers and represents almost seven million people from a variety of sectors.
