New design work for Hampshire

People on the hunt for design jobs may be interested to hear of a new venture that is to set up in Hampshire.

According to Design Week, US-based yacht-builder Palmer Johnson has said that it is to use UK designers for the interiors of its multi-million pound yachts.

The company has been using Nuvolari-Lenard - an Italian design group - for the past five years, but it is to add the new venture to its portfolio as a result of the high quality of UK design work.

"Nuvolari-Lenard is producing much of the interior styling, but we will also be using interior and industrial designers to carry out production detailing," said James Hillard, Palmer Johnson design office manager.

The UK designers won the bid to produce the designs for the yachts despite competition from Turkey, Dubai and France and it is thought that the move will create new jobs at the sites, which are located at Woolston and Hythe.

Palmer Johnson Yachts, founded in 1918 as Johnson and Gmack, began by building and repairing boats for the Great Lakes commercial fishing fleet and is based in Wisconsin.
