A significant number of Britons are planning on working longer hours as the credit crunch continues to make its impact felt, it has been found.

According to a study conducted by Friends Provident, 25 per cent of people questioned - potentially including those with design agency jobs - revealed that they intend to up the number of hours they put in at the office over the next six months.

In addition, 61 per cent of respondents revealed that feel more stressed and prone to illness than they did three years ago.

"Our research shows the credit crunch is having serious implications on the nation's workforce, with people working and worrying more. These are tense times and working longer - often for little or no financial reward - will add to people's stress levels," stated Mark Jones, head of protection at Friends Provident.

Recently, Emma Beagrie, a psychologist and psychotherapist at PsychServe, suggested that the stress experienced by workers can have adverse psychological, physical and behavioural effects, the Aberdeen Press and Journal reported.
