Employees 'encouraged to work while sick'

Published: 06/10/08
As a result of the mounting pressures being experienced by firms, employees - potentially including those with design agency jobs - are being expected to continue working even when they are ill.

This is according to a study conducted by health benefit provider HSA, which found that 35 per cent of HR professionals polled reported that their company encourages staff members to continue picking up emails and performing basic work tasks despite being unwell.

It was also discovered that one in seven firms put pressure on workers to return to the office as soon as possible.

"It is worrying to learn from HSA's research that a substantial number of organisations throughout the UK are putting employees under pressure to come into work while they are still unwell," stated Professor Cary Cooper, professor of organisational psychology at Lancaster University Management School.

Established in 1922, HSA is a provider of healthcare plans and is a trading division of SimplyHealth Access.
